How We Rate and Review Online Casinos

Every score on this site comes from an account we opened ourselves, money we deposited ourselves and withdrawals we timed ourselves. This page explains exactly how that works.

Who writes our reviews

royalrook-en.co.uk is a small, independent editorial project focused on one casino brand for readers in the UK. We are not the casino, we are not employed by its operator, and we do not take deposits or bets. Our reviews are written by Marcus Halliwell, a former payments analyst who has assessed more than 180 online casinos, and every figure is checked by Eleanor Pryce, our compliance and safer gambling editor, before it goes live.

Neither of us is paid per sign-up in a way that depends on the score we give. If a casino does something badly, the review says so — however it affects commission.

How we test a casino

We treat a review as a small investigation rather than a tour of the homepage. For every casino, including our RoyalRook review, the process is the same:

  1. Open a real account from a UK address, using a normal email and phone number, and note how long registration takes and what data is requested.
  2. Complete verification (KYC). We upload ID and proof of address and record how long approval takes, whether documents are rejected, and how clearly the process is explained.
  3. Deposit real money with at least two methods — typically a debit card and an e-wallet or crypto — and check for fees, minimums and how quickly funds arrive.
  4. Read the bonus terms in full. Wagering multiplier, what it applies to, game contributions, maximum bet, expiry and withdrawal caps all go into our notes. We then play through part of the requirement.
  5. Withdraw and time it. We request at least two withdrawals, including one outside office hours, and time each from request to arrival in our account.
  6. Test support on every channel offered, at three different times of day, with a mix of simple and awkward questions — including a request for a deposit limit.
  7. Play on mobile on a mid-range Android phone and an iPhone, checking the lobby, the cashier and live tables on 4G.

Our scoring criteria

Each casino receives a score out of 10 in five areas. The areas are weighted according to how much they matter to a typical UK player:

CriterionWeightWhat we look at
Games & providers20%Size and quality of the library, recognised studios, live dealer range, RTP information, search and filters
Bonuses & terms20%Real value after wagering, clarity of terms, max-bet and expiry rules, cashback without strings
Payments & payout speed25%GBP methods, fees, limits, measured withdrawal times, how verification is handled
Safety, licensing & responsible gambling20%Licence we can verify, encryption, fair-play testing, deposit/loss/session limits, self-exclusion, GamStop awareness
Support & mobile15%Response times we measured, quality of answers, 24/7 availability, mobile browser or app experience

Payments carry the highest weight because slow or disputed withdrawals are the most common reason players lose trust in a casino.

How the final score is calculated

The overall rating is the weighted average of the five criteria, rounded to one decimal place. For example, a casino scoring 9.0 for games, 8.8 for bonuses, 9.1 for payments, 7.6 for safety and 8.3 for support would receive (9.0 × 0.20) + (8.8 × 0.20) + (9.1 × 0.25) + (7.6 × 0.20) + (8.3 × 0.15) = 8.6 out of 10.

We do not award points for marketing claims. If we cannot verify something ourselves — a licence number, a payout promise, a “24/7” label — it scores as if it were not there until we can.

How often reviews are updated

We re-check the key facts of every review at least once a month: welcome offer, wagering, payment methods and limits. We re-test withdrawals and support at least once a quarter, and immediately when readers report a problem. Each change is logged in the “Review updates” panel at the bottom of the review, with the date, so you can see what changed and when.

Affiliate disclosure and editorial independence

This site is funded by affiliate commission. When you click a Play, Login or Register button and open an account, the casino may pay us a fee. That costs you nothing and does not change the offer you receive.

Commission has no influence on scores. Ratings are set by the editorial team using the method above before any commercial discussion, and the casino never sees a review before it is published. We do not accept payment for higher scores, removed complaints or softer wording.

Gambling responsibly

Gambling should be entertainment, never a way to make money or solve money problems. You must be 18 or over to gamble in the UK. Before you play, set a deposit limit and a time limit, and treat any money you deposit as spent.

If you feel gambling is taking up too much of your time or money, help is free and confidential:

  • GamStop — one registration blocks you from all UK-licensed gambling sites for six months, one year or five years.
  • BeGambleAware — advice, self-assessment tools and a route to free treatment.
  • GamCare — the National Gambling Helpline and live chat, open 24 hours a day.

Corrections and contact

We work hard to get every figure right, but casinos change their terms without notice. If you spot something out of date or wrong, email [email protected] with a screenshot or link and we will check it, usually within two working days. Confirmed corrections are listed in the review’s update log.
